An accurate and early assessment of the erosive joint damage in the context of rheumatoid arthritis and similar inflammatory diseases is of paramount importance. To date, the gold standard is represented by conventional radiography (CR), also because of the clear separation between bones and other surrounding tissues. However, CR does not allow for an early diagnosis and, possibly, quantitative assessment of the disease pathological signs, its progression and the therapy outcome. Indeed, it is now widely accepted that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the optimal methodology for achieving exactly such goals.
The objective of the project is to design and implement a prototype system for the quantitative assessment of erosive bone damage in 3D MR images of the wrists. To this aim, we will devise and implement effective methods for the automatic segmentation of the bone contours in such images, and for the quantification, based on the bone contours, of the degree of erosion affecting each bone. These are two challenging research objectives that still miss effective solutions.
